NOI – Not An Ordinary Italian Class – Sunday Italian Program for kids

WINTER and SPRING 2018

NOI – Not an Ordinary Italian Class

The most effective way to learn a second language is to put the young children in situations where the second language surrounds them. And the earlier a child learns a second language, they say, the more likely he or she will quickly attain language proficiency. Il Punto! Italian Cultural Center of Seattle offers your child the opportunity to be surrounded by the Italian language through conversations and social activities. Expose your children to multilingual settings and give them plenty of opportunities to play and speak Italian with other children!

We offer a package of 10 one hour-long lessons, held from January to June twice a month. Our core team is composed by Chiara, Lara and Francesca.

Chiara works at UW Robinson Centre for Young Scholars as an Economics instructor. After graduated from University of Pavia (Italy) she moved to Canada (Toronto), where she obtained her MA in Applied Economics. She moved to Seattle in 2015 and here she continued to teach at the University level. Teaching is indeed her vocation and she recently discovered how teaching Italian to kids is the best opportunity to communicate and share her passion for our culture, art and literature.

Lara was born and raised in Italy. She has been working with children for more than 10 years and she recently worked as an au pair in the USA and in Europe. She is a certified Waldorf educator and she truly loves teaching children, finding it rewarding, enriching and (above all) fun!

Francesca was born in Torino and raised in a small Piemonte mountain village. She left her accounting job in Italy a few years ago in order to follow her husband to Seattle. Here she is seizing the opportunity to complete her college education. Since 2016, she has been an active member of Il Punto! and moderator for the Adults Italian Conversation program offered at the center.

Program:

We offer three different Sunday classes starting on January 28, 2018

AGE 3-5: NOI – ITALIAN PLAYDATE

Class Description

We believe that how children learn is as important as what they learn. With that idea in mind, this drop-off playgroup encourages each child to speak Italian through varied educational materials, activities and social interactions.

The Piccoli is designed for children who have no (or little) exposure to the Italian language. They will learn Italian through games, activities, songs and hands-on creativity (such as art projects).

Learning Outcomes and Instructional Strategies

Children will primarily learn (or expand their understanding of) Italian and they will be exposed to our Culture. The instructor will emphasize the exploration of Italian music, geography, customs and food through creative play.

Resources and Materials

All material will be provided by the instructor.

AGE 6-10: NOI – ITALIAN CLASSES (BEGINNERS)

Class Description

This class is designed for older children who are beginning to explore different areas of the Italian culture and language. Children will become familiar with Italian letters and phonemes. They will build a basic vocabulary through guided listening and speaking activities. This class has a strong focus on building confidence in speaking, listening and understanding of simple Italian sentences.

Learning Outcomes and Instructional Strategies

The first 40 minutes of each class will be indeed dedicated to listening and speaking activities, grammar tools and vocabulary building. Depending on the students’ ages, we might also be able to introduce reading and writing activities. The last 20 minutes will be dedicated to fun learning experiences, often games that beginners and advanced learners can play together.

Resources and Material:

Please bring the following each session*:

  • Notebook and pens to take notes (if you would like).

*Only if your child is already able to write. All other material will be provided by the instructor.

AGE 6-10: NOI – ITALIAN CLASSES (ADVANCED)

Class Description

This course is designed for older children who are already able to express themselves in Italian. BIMBI BIS

Story time in Italian for kids 1st-6th grade. A  volunteer, native Italian speaker, will meet parents and kids at 2.30PM every second Sunday of the month at Biblioteca Italiana Seattle for 20-30min reading time of favole italiane.

Everyone is welcome! Access to the Library is free, but we suggest you become a member of Il Punto! Italian Cultural Center to help support our activities.

We would also like to remind that BIS also has a section dedicated to kids and teens. It is very important that children born in the US from Italian and Italian-American couples are exposed to Italian language from an early age, so it is not forgotten over time. BIS offers a great variety of books, illustrated works and comics that parents and children can borrow and enjoy.
