La Befana arriva alla BIS!

On Sunday, January 8th from 2:30 to 4pm  BIS-Biblioteca Italiana Seattle and Il Punto! will be welcoming you with a special kids event: “La Befana”.

In the Italian tradition, la Befana is an old woman who delivers gifts to children throughout Italy on the Epiphany Eve (night of Jan. 5th). This old woman looks more like a witch, but a good one: your kids will have the chance to see her, listen to a story, of course ask her questions, and receive candies, if they did indeed behave during the year!

A little snack will be provided by il Punto! Adults may stay and purchase a coffee at caffè Musica.

The event is free. Tickets can be reserved at

If you are not a member of Il Punto! Italian Cultural Center, we encourage to subscribe for 2017. Family membership are only $75.

4 scholarships for one month of language study in Perugia from SPSC

Each year, the Seattle-Perugia Sister City Association awards up to four scholarships for one month of language study in Perugia, Italy. Each scholarship is worth approximately $1,200. It includes one calendar month of intensive language study at the University for Foreigners (Università per Stranieri) located in the historic heart of Perugia. There is also a stipend that can be used for room and board or to defray the cost of transportation.

The application process is easy. Fill out the attached application form and email it to the SPSCA scholarship chair Erica Mallin at

You can also download the application form as well as Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) at the Association website. Go to and click on Learn.

You’ll need to hurry, though. The application deadline is Dec. 31, 2016.  If you are not a member of the Seattle-Perugia Sister City Association, not to worry. You can still apply this month and join at the same time.

If you are one of the lucky recipients, you can choose which month you want to travel. SPSCA board members will provide suggestions for apartment rentals and share their favorite Umbrian restaurants and sightseeing tips with you.

There is no age limit or proficiency level required. While in Perugia, you’ll have the chance to improve your language skills, meet students from all over the world and see what it is like to live in one of Italy’s most historic and well-preserved cities.

Italy’s Nominee for Best Foreign Picture is a Vivid Documentary about the Refugee Crisis – Screening on Dec 8th @ NW Film Forum

Beginning on December 8th at 7:30pm, “Fire at Sea”, the newest film from acclaimed Italian director, Gianfranco Rosi, and winner of the 2016 Berlinale Golden Bear will be making its Seattle premiere. The film centers on Samuele, a young boy who lives on the Mediterranean island of Lampedusa, which is the closest European landmass to Libya and Tunisia. While Samuele’s life follows a steady pattern of going to school and hanging with friends, everything around him speaks to the thousands of men, women and children who, for the past 20 years, have braved the ocean to Lampedusa in search of freedom. Simultaneous to following Samuele and other residents around the island, Gianfranco Rosi documents a few of the many horrifyingly conditioned boats that wash ashore, as migrants finally reach land after a harrowing journey. The two worlds, that of the newly arrived refugees, adrift and traumatized, and the timeless Sicilian locals, shaped by generations of devotion to the sea and the church, have little interaction, but are powerfully linked.

We hope you’ll join NW film Forum and Il Punto! for this beautiful and timely documentary that explores the complex impact of the refugee crisis both on the refugees themselves and the Italian locals who come to share their home.

You can learn more about the event and buy tickets on our website:
